Alaska Diary: A vision for Alaska

By Tiffany McClain on Tuesday, February 1st, 2011 at 10:25 am

Hello, fellow Alaskans! I’ve just returned from an inspiring orientation week at Pride Foundation’s Seattle headquarters and am eager to finally get to work as Alaska’s new Regional Development Organizer! As you probably know, Pride Foundation recently hired five new staff members to expand our outreach efforts throughout the Northwest.

The staff and Board are giddy with excitement over the expansion, but we also recognize that our constituents might have questions about how the changes will affect their relationship with Pride Foundation. Here’s why we’ve expanded and what it means for Alaska.

#1: We want to increase the resources available to support prospective scholars and grantees in Alaska.

At Pride Foundation, our ultimate goal is to connect people and organizations with the knowledge and resources they need to succeed. With a Regional Development Organizer in Alaska, we have the opportunity to transform our relationship with grantees and scholars from that of a distant funder to an accessible resource that can more proactively respond to the unique needs of Alaska’s LGBTQ communities. To achieve this goal, we want to build a strong network of visionary steering committee members, volunteers, and donors—people who know Alaska—to make funding decisions, educate their communities about Pride Foundation’s work, and expand the resources available to prospective grantees and scholars in our state.

#2: We want to ensure that the voices of our Alaskan donors are heard and that your giving is personally meaningful.

At Pride Foundation, it’s important for us to really know our donors and help create philanthropic opportunities that meet your unique passions and concerns. Having a staff person on the ground in Alaska will make it easier for us to establish and sustain genuine relationships with our Alaskan donors in order to ensure that we are responding to your needs and interests, whether that means establishing a fund that addresses your personal passion or setting up a time-scheduled contribution that makes it easier for you to give.

#3: We want more Alaskans to know how Pride Foundation’s mission and how we work can benefit them.

The easiest way to learn about what Pride Foundation is all about is to get involved! You may not realize that our grant-making and scholarship funding choices  are made by people just like you who volunteer to review hundreds of applications, conduct interviews, and make decisions. Pride Foundation wants Alaskans to feel connected to and invested in our mission and accomplishments and we are very excited to finally have the resources to recruit and manage a base of volunteers throughout the state! If you’re interested in helping Alaska’s LGBTQ and allied organizations and leaders while getting an up close and personal look at how Pride foundation operates, e-mail me about volunteering for our scholarship, grant review, and state-wide steering committees.

I look forward to working with you!
