Documenting inequality in Anchorage

The Alaska LGBT Community Survey project needs your help documenting inequality in Anchorage

The Alaska LGBT Community Survey is a project of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans community of Alaska (plus our friends & allies) to conduct a statewide survey of our community. We’ll also use it to solicit case histories to document recent experiences of discrimination, harassment, and violence due to sexual orientation and gender identity bias.

In August 2009, Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan vetoed an ordinance to amend the city’s nondiscrimination law to include sexual orientation and gender identity. He argued that there was no quantifiable evidence to prove that LGBTQ people were being discriminated against and therefore no need for us to have legal protections.

To address Mayor Sullivan’s claims, the Alaskan LGBT Community Survey is collecting information on experiences of bias and discrimination.

Taking the survey is simple.  Just:

1. Contact the Project Manager, Shelby Carpenter, at [email protected] or at 907.263.2006 to get a PIN.

2. Go online at http://alaskacommunity.org/ to take the survey.

3. Paper surveys are also available upon request.

To make sure that there is only one person per survey, and to ensure that only members of the LGBT community participate, a valid PIN number is required for your survey to be counted.

Please request a PIN and take the survey today.  And tell your friends to do the same! The deadline is March 31, 2011.
