Grants Help Portland-area LGBTQ Community
In Support of Education, Advocacy and Outreach
Outside In (Portland, OR) $2,000 to fund the Identity Project, which pays for legal name changes and gender changes on Oregon ID cards/driver’s licenses for transgender individuals. Besides paying for these changes, some of the funds will be used to further outreach and publicize services into the community. To date, more than 250 people have been helped through the project.
PFLAG Oregon State Council (Portland, OR) $4,500 for general operating support. PFLAG Oregon State Council (POSC) serves as the support entity and organizing body for all of Oregon’s 12 PFLAG chapters. This year POSC will continue to finance organizational development, leadership training and technical support for chapter leaders. They will also continue financing an organizer working within the African American community, with the goal of creating an African American PFLAG Chapter.
Friendly House (Portland, OR) $4,500 to support the Elder Resource Alliance (ERA) program which serves LGBTQ elders. ERA trains social service and health care providers to become better at serving LGBTQ elders, trains and places “Friendly Visitors” with GBLTQ seniors to provide companionship and assist in household chores and is working on opening a LGBTQ owned/operated elder facility.
Women’s Community Education Project (Portland, OR) $4,500 to support the WCEP’s programs by and for the LGBTQ community. In 2008, they offered 38 LGBTQ events and supported 10 ongoing LGBTQ groups. LGBTQ programs account for one third of total programming. One of the most popular LGBTQ programs, a queer open mic event called “Dirty Queer”, attracts 85-100 per month, which exceeds the number of chairs WCEP has. Some of the funds will be used to purchase folding chairs to ensure that everyone attending their programs has a place to sit.
Love Makes A Family (Portland, OR) $2,500 to fund Family Equality booths at County Fairs in Clackamas and Yamhill Counties. The objective of the booths is to inspire LGBTQ-friendly individuals to action and move undecided people to a supportive position around issues affecting LGBTQ families. Love Makes A Family is strategically targeting County Fairs in counties outside of traditionally progressive Multnomah County.
Unity Project of Oregon (Portland, OR) $4,500 for general operating support. The mission of Unity Project of Oregon (UPO) is to improve the quality of life of Black/African-American gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people through advocacy, arts, education, and social change. In addition to continuing its major programs such as Portland Black Pride, Brother to Brother and Men of All Colors Together, UPO is working to strengthen and add programs that better serve all facets of the LGBTQ Black/African-American community.
Lesbian Health
Planned Parenthood of the Columbia/Willamette (Portland, OR) $2,500 to support the PPCW’s Equal Access Fund which targets LBTQ individuals. Annual exams and pap smears are basic, preventative health care. Yet, resources available for people that cannot afford them are only available to those individuals also seeking birth control services, shutting out many LBTQ people. The Equal Access Fund reduces the barriers low-income, uninsured or underinsured lesbian, bisexual or transgender people face to access affordable, culturally appropriate health care.
