Pierce County Nonprofits Receive Funds
Over $9,000 to Support LGBT Community
Pride Foundation/Pierce County has just announced the five nonprofit agencies they will be supporting in 2010. These organizations were selected by local volunteers, who carefully weighed how to make the most significant impact for the greatest number of people in Pierce County’s LGBT community. The committee had received six applications for funding, totaling $21,123 in requests.
Two of the five agencies funded, Pacific Lutheran University and Gender Alliance of the South Sound, are receiving their first Pride Foundation grants.
The Pride Foundation/Pierce County 2010 grant recipients are:
Pacific Lutheran University , $750 for the Queer Ally Network Project
This grant will help Pacific Lutheran University develop and implement the Queer Ally Network to increase support for the LGBTQ community on campus. This project aims to increase campus safety, strengthen positive self-identities for LGBTQ individuals and foster an affirming campus environment for all students.
Pierce County AIDS Foundation, $3,000 for Oasis Youth Center
This grant will support the general operations of Oasis Youth Center. Oasis is the only drop-in and support center dedicated to the needs of LGBTQ youth in Piece County.
Good Samaritan Behavior Health, 4,000 for Teen Sexual Minority Group
This grant will support the general operations of the Teen Sexual Minority Group in Puyallup. With weekly meetings serving LGBTQ young people, this program is the lone resource for teens outside of the city of Tacoma, within the county.
Gender Alliance of the South Sound, $1,100 for T-Town – Tacoma’s Transgender Stories, Art Project
This grant will support a unique art project featuring the portraits and stories of transgender members of the community in Piece County. Once created, the installation will be featured at the Rainbow Center of Tacoma, travel to several art galleries in the area and ultimately be featured in an online gallery for viewing beyond the geographic area.
Rainbow Center of Tacoma, $300 for Tacoma QPOC , retreat implementation
This grant will support an annual retreat and strategic planning session. The Tacoma Queer People of Color program seeks to create a strong sense of community and network within the QPOC population in Tacoma.
