Racial Equity Initiative

The Racial Equity Initiative addresses the funding inequities that LGBTQ organizations that are run by and for People of Color have historically faced, and to simultaneously increase their ability to help their communities. This project employs three key strategies to strengthen these organizations- build a supportive cohort, provide relevant training and skill building and then provide funding to implement what they have learned. The Racial Equity Initiative is part of a national focus spearheaded by the Funders for Lesbian and Gay Issues (FLGI).

A report by FLGI found that:

  • LGBT People of Color organizations typically operate with little to no paid staffing;
  • 68 % of groups have annual  budgets of $50,000 or less;
  • These groups tend to receive less revenue from government sources, corporations and foundations, than other LGBT focused groups.

Nine different organizations are a part of the first Racial Equity Initiative cohort, which began in 2008. The groups participating are:

Alaska Native Aurora Society (Anchorage, AK)

Asian & Pacific Islander Lesbians & Gays (Portland, OR)

Entre Hermanos (Seattle, WA)

Montana Two-Spirit Society

Portland Latino Gay Pride (Portland, OR)

Trikone-NW (Seattle, WA)

Unity Project of Oregon (Portland, OR)

Voices Rising (Seattle, WA)

Umatilla Morrow Alternatives (Irrigon, OR)
