Watch for These Ads
This week Pride Foundation will begin running ads in newswpapers around Washington State, thanking voters for approving Referendum 71 and keeping the State’s domestic partnership law. I really like that we are starting 2010 by thanking our neighbors for supporting LGBT equality.
We decided to place these ads in community papers where the LGBT community isn’t always as visible.
For this reason we will be running ads in these newspapers:
Cheney Free Press on January 28
Forks Forum on January 28
Guemes Tide in January
Prosser Record-Bulletin on January 20
Shelton-Mason County Journal on January 21
Skagit Valley Herald on January 22
As the results came in after the November election, we saw a map forming where counties around Puget Sound approved the referendum, with the rest of the state rejecting it. Some initial assumptions were made about what this meant, particularly in regards to Eastern Washington’s support for LGBT equality.
We did some research and felt like these assumptions were not accurate. For example, if you compare the Ref. 71 vote to the I-677 vote in 1997 (on a proposed sexual orientation anti-discrimination law) you can see that we made gains in every county except one. On average, Eastern Washington counties increased their support of this LGBT issue by 4.5% over the 1997 vote. Also, bear in mind, these are drastically different issues with one simply asking if lesbian and gay people should be protected from being fired and the current one asking if same-sex couples should have equal rights to their married peers.
We really hope that by placing these our thousands and thousands of allies and supporters throughout our State feel recognized and encouraged to keep involved in our push for full equality.
Did you see our ads in your local paper? If so, we’d love to hear what you thought of them.
This is such a great, proactive idea. I like how the number of voters are in the ad. Thanks!
