Our own Jett Johnson just finished reading The Right to Be Out: Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in America’s Public Schools. A favorite passage of his from the chapter on addressing school climate:
” A study foud by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, for example, found that LGBT youth of color may confront a “tricultural” experience: they can face homophobia from their respective racial or ethnic group, racism from LGBT’s of other racial or ethnic communities, and a combination of the two from society at large”…”All told, taking every aspect of the documented realities into consideration and recognizing every nuance that may exist, it is difficult not to conclude from the growing body of scholarship in this area that additional efforts on the part of school officials are imperative if education institutions are to fulfill their obligations to treat all student equally under the law” pg. 125-26
